Christy

My dream job would involve travel, fashion, and writing. So I guess I’d like to get paid to attend the latest fashion shows in New York, Paris, or Milan and write about those shows for magazines. I have a lot to offer as a fashion critic, really I do. I think I would be a great asset because I bring a fresh, un-jaded perspective to the fashion industry. Sigh! Until Vogue gets in touch with me to interview for that job, I’ll hold down the fort in Rochester, NY where I work as an editor.

When the monotony of the day-to-day job gets to me, I enjoy spending my evenings knitting, cross-stitching, baking, and hand-stamping cards, and if it’s summer time I also enjoy gardening, firing up the grill, and doing something active outside. I love trying new crafts or recipes, so as Craftygal formed into what it is now, I was very excited about the prospect of new crafty opportunities. At tin-can lantern night, I was one of the first folks to dive right in and bang out a flower/dragonfly motif lantern. One of my favorite things to say is, "Oh, we can make those!" Now, always carrying through on that claim is another thing, but it generally pans out for us in the end if we give it a go.

While growing up on Chautauqua Lake, I spent a lot of my time, especially in the summers, crafting with my mom, sister, and friends. The craft box in the bottom of my sister’s closet was always filled with construction paper, glue, glitter, watercolors, a few stray pipe cleaners, and scissors. But when I wasn’t building a fort outside, or painting and making cards, I was playing dress-ups. We had a whole box of play jewelry, and a good portion of my mom’s closet was fair game for playtime.

It’s an interesting spectrum: on one hand we were encouraged to get dirty and build or create projects, and on the other hand the feminine arts were celebrated and taught as well. I think that’s why I not only love baking a mean batch of chocolate-chip and oatmeal cookies, but I also love laying tile or a brick patio. My house is my favorite playground, but when I hang up my overalls and hammer belt I love using fashion as a creative outlet.
