The Cheesin' Season

by Christy

Sandwiched in the middle of this little month is that Hallmark™ holiday to end all Hallmark holidays. You know the one I’m talking about: President’s Day. The day we take a moment to honor our founding fathers and observe all that their gumption has afforded us. Wait a minute; I think I was looking at the wrong date on my calendar. Oh!! This is the month of pink hearts, white doilies, and red roses, unless you’re still holding a grudge from last Valentine’s Day, in which case you’ll be sending black roses.

I remember a time when the only Valentine’s gift I would get was from my mom; life was pretty simple back then. We would do the whole Valentine card trade in school with the makeshift mailboxes and the cupcakes and candy. My sister and I would come racing home all hopped up on sugar and enthusiastically show all our cards to Mom as she finished making dinner. The last touch on the table every February 14th would be little wrapped gifts at each place setting. Mom had hers from Dad, and vice versa. My sister and I would have a small something at our places, too. Before dinner commenced, we would read our cards (my sister’s and mine being hand-made of course from art class) and open our gifts. I can’t tell you a single gift that I got on any of those nights, but it felt so good to be my mom’s Valentine.

This month at Craftygal, as we try to find just the right ways to express our love to our various Valentines, we hope you’re having a lovely little month. To make it that much more special, we’ve crafted a pretty fabulous issue. Take a moment and sit with Taryn at the fridge while she decorates some broken-hearted sugar cookies. Then head over to the craft table where she’s making some mixed up Valentines--a mix tape or CD may be in your loved one’s future. Jan is reflecting on band boys and the girls who love them at the stump, and has traveled to the international cheese section at the grocer’s for a cheese-tasting party. I had the opportunity to chat with mohair goat farmers, and shop owner, Carole Woodgate. Together we discussed the fine art of going from raw mohair to finely spun yarn on our porch this month.

May your Valentine’s Day be everything you expect!
