Thoughts on Love and Vengeance

by Jan

February. In upstate New York, it's the worst part of the winter. Valentine's day is a shiny red flame in the midst of a slushy gray month. We shiver through the seemingly endless hours of what we keep reminding ourselves is the shortest month, ticking off the days ‘til the 14th. Things are supposed to heat up then, right?

But how can this lover's holiday ever hope to meet up with our expectations? It's doomed from the get-go. Just like Charlie Brown waiting hopelessly by his mailbox for a valentine, we're waiting for a love steamy enough that it will melt away the rest of February.

Maybe your sworn office enemy always gets the flowers you've secretly been hoping for. Perhaps your darling has decided to make a stand against the greeting card industry and boycott the occasion. Or maybe you're dateless and sick to death of hearing about everyone else's plans. Whatever it is that wreaks havoc with your holiday, it's up to you to turn up the temperature—you just can't always count on Sweetie.

And when it comes to sparking things up, what's better than a little vengeance? Surely the combination of the gloomy-ass weather and that candy-ass holiday has inspired many a gal to avenge a wrong our two. Whether it's sending some black roses to the ex's new squeeze, or a dropping a dead fish on the doorstep of that cad who left you pining, you can find some naughty way to fire up a little conflagration of your own.

This month, we at craftygal have been thinking our own thoughts of love and vengeance. Taryn sits down with a handwriting analyst on the Porch for some tips on divining the secrets that lie in between the lines of those love letters. Over in the Travels bureau, Christy winds up the tale of our Toronto trip with a focus on our mutual love—crafts—at the One of a Kind Craft Show. I'm on the Stump pondering ways to express a little loving kindness at the grocery store. And you'll find Amie at the fridge, rustling up the ingredients for a savory Valentine's Day paella. Or, if the object of your desires needs a little push in the right direction, you can join Taryn as she crafts up a voodoo doll. Whether your February plans are spicy or icy, we send you this issue of craftygal with love.
