Ring in the New Year with Our Funky Drink Rings

by Jan

How many times has it happened to you? You’ve no sooner set settled in with your drink at a party than a friend with an urgent request distracts you. Maybe your girlfriend needs you to run interference in an awkward conversation with her ex-lover. Maybe the host needs help dishing up the hors d’oeuvres. Or maybe you’re the hostess and new guests just keep ringing your bell. A gal at a party is always on the move, and you just can’t balance stemware with emergencies. So you set down that cocktail and you’re off.

Whatever it is that takes you away from your beverage, you can be guaranteed you’ll return to find three identical glasses sitting right where you put it. Which one is yours? Only an incredibly accurate DNA swab test can tell.

That’s where our handy little drink rings come in! They’re like jewelry for stemware--stylish, practical, and each one’s unique. Just fasten them ‘round the bottom of your wineglass, champagne flute, pilsner glass, or brandy snifter and you’ll never again find yourself arm wrestling for the colder, fuller brew.

While you could just whip up your own drink ring to take along to social gatherings, crafting a set as a hostess gift would be awfully thoughtful. Once you’ve gathered your supplies and started work, you’ll be amazed at how inexpensive and easy it is to make a big ol’ batch.

Supplies:

20 gauge wire

Assorted small beads in a variety of colors

Charms

Jump rings (for adding charms)

Tools:

Ruler

Wire snips

Needlenose pliers

Glass bottle (for forming rings)

Step 1: Measure and cut a 4.5 inch length of wire.

Step 2: Use the pliers to make a small loop in one end of the wire.

Step 3: Slide on beads and charms in whatever order you like.

Step 4: Holding the wire parallel to the work surface and with the loop flat, use the pliers to bend the last 1/4 inch of the non-looped end up at a 90 degree angle.

Step 5: Wrap the wire around the neck of the glass bottle, fastening the bent end into the loop. The finished ring will look like a hoop earring and will fasten and unfasten in the same way.

If you’re making a set of drink rings, try to make each as unique as possible by using different colors of beads or distinctive charms.
